This popular channel on cable television is best known for tracking storms and producing stories about historical weather and climate effects on our planet. PBS Teachers has a large number or resources available on many topics found at this Second Life location. If you are feeling adventurous today, you might surf a 60 foot wave here or look to survive intense snow conditions.
Remember to take a picture of your avatar with or without Jim Cantore or Stephanie Abrams and then return to the NING to share your pictures and the resources you have searched and found on www.pbsteachers.org.
Well, as a social studies teacher my first thought today in looking for resources at PBS was to search for how weather affected historical events. I was disappointed that I did not find any. Now I am wondering if there has ever been a documentary made about such,,I will have to google that. But PBS does have tons of weather related resources. If I were teaching modern history, I would most certainly use their resources for Hurricane Katrina. With that said,,I found a neat lesson called Hurricane Katrina: You Be the Reporter. I am also a Language Arts teacher,,I think I will be adapting that lesson to something closer to home. This holiday hunt is proving to be quite valuable.
This has to be one of my favorite sims for a myriad of reasons. Where else can you snowboard, mountain bike and ride 60 foot waves?!? The Weather Channel Sim of course!
Two great resources to show you and your class whose really calling the shots! Also gives good insights on the economic and human costs involved in dramatic weather occurances.
We have a program at my school called "Robust Vocabulary" where students are challenged to use different words in there writing. This activity from It's a Big Big World fits perfectly. http://pbskids.org/bigbigworld/parentsteachers/activities_02.html The students are asked to describe what the weather is using different samples of pictures.
