PBS Teachers in Second Life

A collaborative space for educators working on the Holiday Hunt!

What country provides the US with one of it's favorite ethnic foods that is nothing like it actually is in it's home country? Which country has some of the best beaches and waves in all of North America? What country has a state called Tabasco? Which country has dense rainforests and vast desert wastelands?

While you're there... make sure to enjoy horsebackriding as you explore the sim.

Don't forget: Once you find this location in SL, take a snapshot of yourself and save it to your desktop. Upload your snapshot to your "My Page" in NING and attach as a file to your discussion post if you like.

PBS Teachers has many resources about Mayan culture. I really enjoyed this video clip. It details how NASA satellite imaging has revolutionized the way that Mayan sites are discovered.

Nice kitty...............

First resource is a great lesson plan on the dynamics of the U.S.-Mexico border. Teaching in Arizona, this topic is a mainstay in the media and in the classroom.

I think it is beneficial to add this site about the Mexican-American War of 1846 - 1848. I like to explain to my students that events in history are not random events but a continuous thread of occurances that impact us today. Current relations between our countries have a foundation on the events that transpired nearly 200 years ago. It helps to provide students with the foundation of todays relations between to U.S. and Mexico. Viva PBS!

I remember my interest and wonder the first time I heard about cascarones about 8 years ago. How could I have gotten to be that old and never known about this wonderfully fun tradition?

Along with the units about celebrations around the world and our observation of United Nations Day this lesson from Postcards from Buster would fit right in http://pbskids.org/buster/parentsteachers/act-cascarones.html
